Reason #1: The support from the community is so amazing!
For example, I’m part of two future SLP groups on Facebook, Future SLPs and IMAGAS (Insight, Mentoring, and Guidance for Aspiring SLPs), and I can’t believe how helpful it’s been. I’m currently in enrolled in a post-bacc program in CSD (Communication Sciences & Disorders) and I applied for a SLS (Speech Language Specialist) position at a local school district who was hiring students who were not yet licensed but in an accredited academic program. I got a call for a panel interview and I asked these two groups for advice and the feedback was way more than I expected. I went to my interview confident and needless to say, I got offered a position!
For the next three months, I’m being paid to shadow and learn from their most experienced SLS/SLPs and if things pan out (crossing my fingers!), they’ll be offering me the full position! I’m so excited about this opportunity and I realize how lucky I am. And it’s all thanks to the support from my program director, my classmates, and from SLPs from all around the country.
